Thing 17. PBWiki Sandbox

Well, I played in the sandbox, posted my blog, and it was mildly interesting. If I had more of a need to use things like PBWiki Sandbox, or many of the other things I've experience with TLC 2.0, I would probably have more to say and more interest. I find it fun to play with anything on the Internet, but time is limited. I am always deciding quickly what can I ignore so I can focus on what needs to be done now. I hope to have more time in the future.

I have decided to share my experience as a Marine in Beirut, Lebanon during the 1983 PLO evacuation. It was only 9 months after boot camp when I found myself on night patrols in the streets of Beirut with an M16 rifle that was not loaded. I was under orders to not load my weapon due to fear of an accidential discharge. I may have been new to the Marine Corps, but as a 26 year old recruit, I surely had better sense. I never did understand why a Marine combat unit was doing a job that was not part of my Marine training. The mission of the United States Marine Corps is to close with and destroy the enemy with fire support and close combat.

As a Forward Observer, I conducted radar becon exercises with naval support ships from the roof of the headquarters building, which months after I was gone, was blown up and 230 Marines and Sailors were killed. I was fortunate to get back home unharmed, but I never forgot the experience, because it showed me that I need to always trust my judgement and never doubt my gut feelings.

I visited Technorati.com and tried to read the article titles, "Top Ten Careers - Are You Ready for a Change?," It took some doing, but I did finally find the article. I really wasn't impressed with the site layout, but I will probably adjust to it. The thing is, I won't need to adjust to their layout format because I will find another site that is better suited to my style of information organization. The beauty of the Internet is like the weather in Florida. If you don't like it, just wait 10 minutes and it will change. In the time it took me to write this posting, it is safe to say that another site like Technorati.com has already been created.

Rss feeds and Newsreaders

The reason this blog entry is later than the other TLC 2.0 23 things was due to the very problem RSS feeds and Newsreaders were designed to help with-not enough time. The idea of news finding you instead of you finding news is the best possible world to be living in. Once I was able to take the necessary time to see what RSS was all about, I was impressed. Thing 10. Del.icio.us and Tagging

Tagging is a means of finding items based on keyword descriptions to assist the individual in locating particular items when conducting searches. I must agree wit hDebby Bradford's statement about tagging when she said, "Tagging makes searching easier for the lay person. It can make finding things so much easier but on the other hand, can enable the return of many false results". There is much more you can read about tagging, but I am not going to dwell on the topic any longer.
Also as part of thing 10, Del.icio.us is a great idea. Take away the worry of your computer crashing and loosing all your bookmarks. Del.icio.us provides aplace to keep your bookmarks that are available from any computer at anytime. This is excellent.

Which came first? After checking out so many different sites, which all offer the same social experience, I wonder which one was the first to start this new trend. Where will the future take us now? Regardless of where the future takes us, it will be better than where we have been.

OverDrive Audio Options

OverDrive is an interesting way to listen to an audio-book. I do like the option to burn a cd when allowed. More and more I find myself getting further away from the printed format. Truly a sign of the times.

Podcasting to catch a language

They provide to the learner an example of how the words are pronounced and enables the learner to repeat as often as needed to perfect their understand and ability to speak clearly. Out Of Nowhere

This video clip says so much more than words could ever express. Aside from showing anyone who views the video the difficulty there is in playing guitar, this video format can be used to educate in a number of ways. Since our youth of today don't read, a video clip might actually teach them something without them realizing it.

Assignment 19

Well, I looked at Facebook for assignment 19 and I really wasn't impressed. It has limited features and really strikes me as a waste of time. I get my e-mail from other sources and as far as finding people on the Internet, there are many other ways to accomplish that task.
My time is very valuable and I would prefer a one stop shopping type of Internet site. One place where I can do everything I need to do for work as well as play. Yes, I am demanding and will not settle for less than perfection. I think I will not need to wait long before such a place exists.

Wikis are an interesting way for people to share their thoughts, feelings, and knowledge in a format which is designed to let them choose what they want to say, how they want to say it, and when they choose to say it. It's better than standing on the corner with your friends sharing your thoughts if you live in the northeast during the winter months.

Thoughts on Web 2.0

After reading several articles pertaining to Web 2.0, I have to wonder where some people experience the library of today. I would love to find the library where intellectual pursuit was the holy grail of activity and endeavor, but the reality of the library I know is a place where customers show little respect for the staff, children are dropped off at the door and told not to come home till the library closes, and the day is spent policing young adults about their behavior and use of the computers. Granted, our customer base needs our assistance, but our customers visit the library to get their DVDs more than anything else. I long for the day that true research and intellectual inquire has a resurgence, but I am not the most optimistic of observers.

It is really cool to be able to have your own library listed on the Internet. I wish there wasn't a 200 item limit--my library is about 600 books--but it is a nice way of sharing your personal collection of books with others.

Aside from the Beatles reference in my title this posting is to satisfy the 9Th requirement of a series of exercises to improve my knowledge of the changing social climate--maybe paradigm shift--in the Internet use and activity taking place today. If you Google the term "new technology" you will become aware when you see the thousands of hits that it is nearly impossible to keep up with the changes taking place on the Internet and with the associated technologies. Fortunately for me, technology is fun, so I find learning new things through the medium of the Internet child's play.
I recently had a Pacemaker operation which introduced me to the state of the art technology associated with Pacemakers. My Pacemaker is just a bit larger than a fifty cent coin, about twice as thick, and fitted with a lithium battery which is expected to last 10 years. Imagine what will be available when my battery needs to be replace in 10 years? I only spent about a day in the hospital before I was released and in just 2 months time I am running 3 miles a day. Modern technology is amazing.

Thoughts on Web 2.0

Based on what I have read about web 2.0, I find it very interesting that so many people think
Web 2.0 is a smoke and mirrors scam. I agree that Web 2.0 is a vital part of the web of the future.
The more you work with the social community tools available, the better you understand how everything is linked or can be linked. The limits are the ones the individual places on himself/herself.
